A Chillum is a narrow funnel which is usually made from fired clay, but nowadays it is also available in other materials like stone, wood and glass. A funnel which has a filter stone within it can be used for smoking; if it is not present the smoking substance might drop into your mouth.

 A chillum is preferred over a cigarette since there is no need of any tobacco in it; besides it is faster. Always use a cloth while smoking a chillum; or else there is a risk of burning your hands. Smaller chillums are better than larger ones. A smaller one gives a smoother smoke. It brings hot smoke straight into your throat. A large pipe makes the smoke cold and also takes a lot of smoke into your lungs.

The origin of the chillum is spiritual; Indian Sadhus have been said to have used chillums since many years. Though it is reported to have originated in India, chillums are also found in other places like South America and Europe.
